Location: Valeč, Karlovy Vary District, Czech Republic
Valeč (formerly Waltsch), in the Karlovy Vary district, is the classic Bohemian hyalite deposit, mentioned as early as 1823 by Zippe and present in historical collections, including Goethe's. The opal-AN was deposited there in vitreous globules within the cavities of the basalt and tephrite of the Doupov volcanic massif. After 1945, the area became a military zone (Hradiště); it is now also a nature reserve. Beautiful, intact specimens remain rare.
Here, the hyalite forms a gem-like crown, brilliant as glass, clearly detached from its dark volcanic matrix. The contrast is immediate, the whole sculptural. Under short-wave UV light, the color is a characteristic neon green. |
